OK. So now I looked around and found out that the butterfly is not part of the work, but part of the blog. I'd love to have a butterfly like that. It's very life like.
Somebody stayed up late to get their entry in early! I thought I'd wait for it also, I think I'll sleep on it though. Was it a surprise that all your skin and flesh peeled off after putting it in that vat off toxic goo? That'll teach you!
Oh my god! Now there's something I wouldn't like to run into in a back alley. Surprise? No kidding! Fantastic expression of the theme and I love the detail. I just looked at last week's entry. 104 comments?! I've never seen that many before, even on Carla's blog!
Hmm. The surprise must be the reaction I got when this popped up on my screen - it was one of those "GAAAAH!" moments. It's nine in the morning; I'm not ready for such vibrant colours!
Oh, that's sweeeet ! The toxic palm-print (bone-print?) would make anybody shriek in terror and pain. Not to mention suprise ! Great expression on the victim, Anonymous!
For all the other commenters.....I feel more fortunate than all of you as I have seen this piece in real life, and it looks bloody awesome. The web doesn't do it justice in picking up the texture etc.
darn it...i just spewed diet coke all over my computer screen!!! ...NICE JOB with the surprise on all levels; very cool effects and combination of illo elements. Better not tell evil kitty he's got competition...
Very intense! The green looks very poisonous, and her expression is absolutely terrifying. Are the veins of rusty color throughout part of the collagraph process? They create such a wonderful grainy texture that makes the white bones and teeth just pop right out. Very, very compelling!
ROFLMAO at this one, A. You know, one time I was punching my brother, when he moved, a brick wall took the skin off two knuckles right down to the bone! On the way to the emergency room I peekd from time to time...the bones had a greenish cast to them. :O
Surprised myself with yesterday being the first day off from Illustration Friday since March 2nd! Actually since September last year but was only a lurker then };-} Answering any questions:
Anthony Woodward: "Was it a surprise that all your skin and flesh peeled off after putting it in that vat off toxic goo?" A: No, it wasn't a surprise but it was my artist materials that did it - no need for a vat. Think IFs would all be surprised if they looked into the truth about the toxicity of materials they work with.
Jamie: “what's the medium?” A: Collagraphy is a printmaking technique where the results resemble an etching but without resort to the use of toxic chemicals. Printed from a block built up with layers of cut and torn card, which was textured and printed intaglio.
Steve: “Hmmmm. This rilly didn't happen, did it ?” A: “Yes it did”
Carla: “Are the veins of rusty color throughout part of the collagraph process?” A: “All parts of the image are deliberately marked on the collagraph. Printmaking always has an element of surprise after pulling a print. The ‘veins’ are from tearing card.”
was that a cry for a more reasoned comment anonymous. ;) I want to take issue with one of your replies above. I don't think the acids are the problem in intaglio printing, I would say more the inks and the solvents that one uses to clean them off. or have you got a greener ink. or have I misunderstood completely what you were trying to say. as for the image, I love the scarlike red weals, I assume you do too. they really work. the three nostrils are also a powerful disincentive to use these dangerous substances without protection/good reason. I also like the way the skeletal hand repeats as wild hair forms. I thought that my ouch summed all of those arguments up nicely :)
I was also surprised Scott! You are speaking to an expert on 'non-toxic' printmaking. On the bottom left of the image is an ideogram used in between other signs in mathematical and geometrical ideography. It means 'not similar to', 'not congruent with'. There is also an anti upside-down ideogram. I replace clean-up solvents with vegetable oil. In regards to inks, acrylic is safer than oils plus ranges of 'non-toxic' inks can be found.
Your "Ouch" did sum your reaction nicely. In fact, there would be few IFs who wouldn't say "Ouch" if they knew what they are working with :)
Great print! I love reading all the comments, and I have to say – my hat is off to you for using less toxic materials. You make fantastic work, so I hope you will live long and make more of it (fantastic work)… Also, I think as many artists as there are and so many of them are not even aware of materials they are working with, discussion on what we all work with is necessary – I saw with my own eyes a person smearing cadmium red paint (oil) out of the tube onto the canvas with bare hands – I am sure this person will be surprised, not unlike your print, later… He-he. Oh, well… I just went into a saga. Sorry about it. Lily.
Lily White - He-he, your cadmium friend will be surprised, although no laughing matter! Your friend will probably be finding out about the effects of titanium white also. Thanks to your telling beginnings of your friend's saga, it won't be too late for some IF participants! Never say sorry ...
Thanks Alina Chau!
Hmmmm, maybe I should have used a louder, more toxic colour combination. Hhahaha - your 11th box was a huge surprise Anthony Woodward!!
Oh what a shrieking, screaming surprise... the first time I saw this.. I think I really jumped! What a toxic lovely, it hurts to look at her... the work is spectacular, the results are dramatic.
Tend to predict all the time :) I have been having a couple of weeks like this - hope it doesn't continue for much longer! Oh dear .... hope your next week is a better one ...
Hmm how about a pair of sunglasses with one lens green and the other orange - would that make the world look more 3-d???
I've been breathing deeply and hope I'll have a sensible mood in my head tomorrow when I have to respond to the latest piece of nonsense. At least we've moved out and don't have to put with them all the time any more - we just want our money back!!! Whoops.... almost got myself into toxic overload again there...
I wrote an article for the local paper that didn't name names but gives some advice I'd wish I'd had about renting... trouble is it'd all gone relatively painlessly before...
oh... I'll have to go now... before the purple of my face clashes with these new sunglasses
I would love to see that illustration used on some drug labels or maybe even somewhere posted in a pharmacy! :-)Anonymous - also - Great interpertation on the Blue theme last week!!!! I was definately lost in the depth and the whole aura of the piece. Very talented!!!
Thankyou Wilnara! Teehee, think the pharmacists would find that amusing ... one told me recently "pills are made to be sold, not to be taken"! Hhehheee.
ModPresumeYouNeedPerfume Badly, because you look like a monkey and you smell like one too :)
Didn't know if you wanted everyone to know you were a drug dealer Merlinprincesse! Just because I quoted something you said doesn't make you famous ...
Mmmm. I like the flow and playfulness . Your submission for 'Strength" is cool and love those colours. Agree with the intuition etc, creativity is a great world for it to be in. : )
You could have pretended you were being nice about my submission Bodgroom! I use intuition too and think you are right about being a monkey. Eat those fleas!
No, it is very sane Jane Doe. You need to be sane if not wanting to hurt yourself with toxins :)
I know, I've only been taking the mick this week. I was confused between you and Hellcat until I realized it's obvoius how to tell by the pics. Durrr. I bet you are intuitive but not about me being a monkey, cheeky. ;d
Anormalrust, my scrambled Egg (Head) has made the necessary connections to understand the picture id business. Bodgroom is illuminated and enlightened now, but has not sat on bananas it's just the way I walk okay.
Had to look again at the lovely colors of the “bones”, they have grown on me over the week. Stop! I am not redecorating in those colors! Never! Thanks all the same, it has been fun reading comments and replies, as usual! Cheers! Lily.
Thank you for visiting again Lily White ... my bones also groaned over the week. Actally now you mention colour schemes ... think this is a recreation of our kitchen in the 60s!!! Oh dear.

Very striking illustration. The butterfly was such a nice touch!

Thanks, I hope your hopes are stronger than your predictions!
Teehee ... oh dear. Time for some serious creative visualisation!
Its hard to be creative when seeing red...
